Stanley Triggs

Jeremy Behn — November 22, 2013

Stanely wandered into my shop back in early October I think, took me awhile to get to this post! He left me with some CD’s which he says were 10 years in the making. All original mandolin tunes (on a Neopolitan mandolin his father acquired in Kaslo I believe) about his time working and exploring as a young man at the North end of Kootenay Lake.

He lives in Montreal now(most of his kids, raised in Montreal, have moved to the Kootenays) but grew up around Nelson and worked in the Lardeau and Duncan Lake area as a young man. His father, William Triggs was the purser on the sternwheeler SS Moyie for a time in the early 1900’s. He returns every year to spend time at his cabin in Meadow creek and this year was working on reclaiming an old indian trail on the North side of Hammill Creek.

Thank you for sharing your music and stories Stanley!

Kata 4/4 Cello

— November 22, 2013

Excellent value for the advancing student. The bones of this instrument are solid as demonstrated by Michael Kevin Jones. The set up has been tweaked by me to play well, which includes Thomastik Superflexible strings.

Aline Daigle-selkirk music student

Jeremy Behn — November 3, 2013

Hi Jeremy,

My violin sounds so beautiful I’ve been playing it all morning. I think moving the soundpost really opened the sound and I’m really happy with the way the bridge sounds.

Again thank you so much, I was worried about getting my violin back and it sounding completely different with the new bridge but it really sounds great and I’m so incredibly happy with it!!

Yamaha professional series Flugel Horn

— November 2, 2013

This is the Yamaha YFH-731.  Now discontinued it has a medium bore at .433 and is the standard for good quality flugel horns at a reasonable price. Silver plated, this instrument has barely been used and is priced well below it’s usual street price of approx $1,000. Includes a well made hardshell case. See the used brass section to view a companion Yamaha professional series Cornet.

Janet Pearson

Jeremy Behn — October 23, 2013

Buying a new guitar at Jeremy’s shop was such a pleasure for me. Being a beginner player, I was far too intimidated to go into a big city music store and just start playing guitars.

Jeremy made me feel comfortable and had a great range of instruments for me to try out. His knowledge is extensive and I am confident that I bought a really great product. Now I’m very happily making and sharing music. Janet Pearson, Nourish Cleansing

Michael Kevin Jones

Jeremy Behn — October 23, 2013

UK Cellist Michael Kevin Jones very kindly posted a youtube endorsement for Instruments of Change at:

You can also hear Michael Kevin Jones play an advancing student cello set up by myself (Jeremy Behn) at the very last few minutes of this Radio Free Kaslo interview with Michael.

Music Restoration Project

Jeremy Behn — October 18, 2013

Neil Johnson and Louis Bockner are the spark behind MRP. Although I would say, and I think Neil and Louis would agree, it’s ‘all of us’ who are creating the MRP. Universal consciousness in action, illuminated daily in the ordinary magic of people expressing themselves through music and other existential musings looking for a voice.

Here is an MRP clip featuring myself, Jeremy Behn, touching on the reincarnation aspect of helping souls inhabit or extend themselves into the vessels we know as musical instruments, one aspect of what I do at the Mountain Fruit Folklore Centre.

The work these two are doing is full of passion and inspiration. Their dedication to quality with regards to video/audio and attention to artistic detail is remarkable. It’s film like these two are creating that inspires us to make change in our lives and let that change ripple and overlap into the change of others.

View their first music video;

And go to their Indiegogo page if you’d like to support their project, it’s worth it!

Plywood Dbl Bass

— October 15, 2013

These are handmade by a small family run violin company in China. I deal with them directly, no middleman and have been very pleased with their product. The all plywood version I sold for $900 and the hybrid version with solid spruce top, laminate back and sides for $1,200. Good bang for the buck after I’ve done a decent setup and put better quality strings on!

Eastman 505A in Classic Sunburst

— October 2, 2013

This mandolin is not often available as the ‘Classic Sunburst’ is made in smaller quantities and goes quickly. Very different sounding instrument than the oval hole with a decidedly better feel in terms of upper fretting access as the neck heel comes into play more at the 12th fret as opposed to the 9th fret of the oval hole 504A.

Oberon Guitar Trio

Jeremy Behn — September 30, 2013

I’ve never heard this trio but it sounds as though they easily invoke medieval romance or a trip to the outermost moon of Uranus. I’m predicting another world class concert put on by the Kaslo Concert Society.

Friday, October 4, 2013, 7:30 pm St. Andrew’s United Church, Kaslo, BC.

1/4 Lichmere 'hole in the heart' Violin to Viola conversion

— September 27, 2013

Decent conversion done by Allegro strings in Bellingham, Wa. This conversion produces a reasonbaly convincing lower end viola, with the appropriate string gauges, from a violin. This was a decent entry level instrument, good condition, no bow. Not an easy find in these parts if your little one is attracted to viola!

Cordoba 12 Natural Fusion

— September 26, 2013

Fantastic crossover guitars for folks who like aspects of both steel strings and classicals. Thinner neck (thickness) with slightly less width at the nut, 1 7/8″, radiused fingerboard, cutaway and pickup. Cedar top on this model, case not included!

Jim Van Horns; History of Country Music-Pt 5

Jeremy Behn — September 23, 2013

Jim Van HornThe poster shows the way but let me say; Jim is a true resource on the history of these ‘Old Tyme Music’ genre’s. He is featured weekly on Kootenay Co-op Radio with his show, ‘Liner Notes’ and always has some rare and intersting songs and info from long ago. It’s a history lesson with someone who is passionate about the music he likes! I might add that he has a wonderful radio voice and endearing stage personna in just being himself, this Capitol Theatre show will be a cozy, funfilled afternoon.

That’s Jim on the left being interviewed by Randy Morse of Radio Free Kaslo about his upcoming show. This interview should be broadcast on Friday, October 4th, 11am on Kootenay Coop Radio.

Saskia and Darrel

Jeremy Behn — September 21, 2013

I took in Saskia Overbeek and Darrel Delaronde’s show for a second time in around a year I’d say. Previously at the Langham and this time at the United Church yesterday evening. As husband and wife they have a wonderful rappore on stage and don’t hesitate to throw in a little gender humour. They’re both great storytellers in song and in between songs. Comfortable Canadiana at it’s best! Next year we’ll be sure to corner them for a Radio Free Kaslo interview.

Langham founder plays the Langham

Jeremy Behn — September 20, 2013

Michael Guthrie will be performing his eclectic mix of music at the Langham on Sat, Sept 21 at 7:30pm. If you don’t know Michael, visit his website, to find out more about his spearheading the rescue of the very theatre he will be performing in, which took place more than 30 yrs ago! You can also find out more about Michaels musical journey on Radio Free Kaslo’s May 24th show. Only musician I’ve ever seen play ‘Shortnin’ Bread’ on a 2 stringed rebec derived from the arabic rebab, I’ve been learning lots about stringed instrument history from Michael on his visits to Mtn Fruit, thanks Michael!

The Kaslo Institute-Demystified!

Jeremy Behn — September 18, 2013

Kaslo resident Randy Morse (host of Radio Free Kaslo) has a beautiful, cooperative, sustainable and exciting vision for the Community of Kaslo and surrounding area. Come and learn more about this vision Thurs, Sept 19th, 7pm @ the Langham Theatre.

Casey Burns Blackwood Folk Flutes

— September 12, 2013

Casey Burns has been handcrafting wooden flutes for over 30 yrs. They are beautiful in every respect and the warmth of a wooden flute is unmistakeable. This folk flute is a simple, high quality instrument that is meant to be affordable and enjoyable, it is! We carry three versions of the folk flute; std hole spacing, small hole spacing (ever so slightly smaller than std for smaller hands) and a large hole version (the actual finger hole diameter is larger) which produces more volume, better tonal balance and better ergonomics.

Mr Mojo interview and concert

Jeremy Behn — September 9, 2013

Here is a few minutes of footage featuring Randy Morse interviewing Morien Jones just before his Childrens CD Release Party. The event was well attended despite a few drops of rain and I highly recommend anyone with or without kids make an effort to catch Morien live. Moriens music is very strong rythmically and both kids and adults can’t stay still when he plays. Love your music Mojo!

Blueridge BR-40T Tenor Guitar

— September 7, 2013

The tenor guitar, like many instruments, holds a particular place in the history of instruments but, like many others it has been rediscovered and for some played in new directions. I love the tension on these instruments, you can really dig your fingers into the strings. The tuning, in fifths, opens up a whole new palette and there are many finger patterns that can be transferred from other instruments to this tuning, tenor banjo being the most obvious or a mandola for another example.

Case $124.95

Cigano GJ-10 Selmer copy

— September 7, 2013

Le ‘Petite Bouche’ or oval hole model of Gypsy Jazz guitar was developed after Mario Macaferri parted ways with Selmer. With a longer scale length and joined at the 14th fret this style of guitar is what Django Reinhardt used for lead playing with his 1930’s orchestra. Most noticeable about these guitars, besides their unique sound is the wider finger board, measuring 1 7/8″ at the nut. Hardshell case included.

Gypsy Jazz D-hole (grande bouche) Macaferri GJ-15

— September 5, 2013

The Cigano GJ-15 is a decent entry level Macaferri copy made by Saga Instruments. Fit and finish is nice, it does a reasonable job of producing that  bright thin punchiness to play rythm backup for Django or your frineds and it comes with a hardshell case.

CD Release Party for Morien Jones!

Jeremy Behn — September 3, 2013

Morien Jones is a dear friend and wonderful musician who has a gift for connecting with, and enjoying children just as they are! As gifted as he is he has worked tirelessly on all of his musical skills, whether it be performing, recording or songwriting. This is his first full length CD of music for children. Come on out and have a short rest on Sat, Sept 7th from 1-2 PM on the lawn of the Kemball Ctr, while the kids follow the piper!

Hammered Dulcimer-handmade

— September 1, 2013

This is a fine sounding 3 course instrument that spans 2.5  octaves. The instrument was made locally and includes a hardshell padded case with tuning wrench, hammers, table leg and knee leg. Fantastic price for some unique musical exploration!

KIRBY SEWELL

Jeremy Behn — August 29, 2013

Blues singer Kirby Sewell (pronounced soul) from Calgary visited Mtn Fruit yesterday for an Radio Free Kaslo interview. Kirby played Kaslo Jazzfest in 2012 and was well recieved. Without giving too much of the interview away Kirby loves to laugh and talk about the business side of music. Look for Kirby’s interview at Nirvanna Chronicles in the coming weeks.

Getzen Trumpet

— August 29, 2013

This is a decent quality trumpet made in Wisconsin, USA. Worth about $700 new. A few dings and some oxidation but blows fine and valves are smooth.
