1950s Silvertone Archtop

— September 21, 2018

What a gem! This guitar has been gently used by its single previous owner. The solid spruce top doesn’t have a single crack, which is very rare for a solid top of this vintage. The fingerboard appears to be Brazilian Rosewood, a wood you won’t be seeing much of nowadays, but was definitely used in many instruments from this era.

Original hardware and electronics are all in working order. The neck is beefy and in great shape, no truss-rod. We’ve made a new bone nut and lightened up the bridge a bit, which we find will almost always open up the sound and produce more volume. Other than that there was a few hours of buffing out the top to its original sheen and a little bit of set-up and she’s off to the races!

Wickland Banjo – handmade in BC, Canada

— September 21, 2018

Made on Saltspring Island in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia by long-time instrument maker Grant Wickland, with some additional work/customization done by our luthiers here at Mountain Fruit. These include replacing the synthetic head with a real skin one and changing the strings over to nylon, as well as some refining of the neck profile to take comfort and playability to the next level.

So far we have never been disappointed with the improvement in tone that a real goat skin head brings to a banjo.

The nylon strings and the fretless neck give access to micro-tone playing and slides in a very mellow and lyrical tone, but this instrument still plenty of the volume and clarity that banjo players love. This banjo certainly stimulates a new approach to playing banjo!

  • Maple-Ebony-Maple three-piece neck
  • Ebony fretboard
  • Wickland custom-made bridge
  • Goat Skin Head
  • 11″ Pot
  • Grover tuners

Vintage B&J Parlour

— August 1, 2018

We had the absolute pleasure and privilege of restoring this parlour guitar c.1910s from the B&J Company.

Aside from some cracks in the top and back and some broken braces this guitar was in pretty incredible shape for being well over 100 years old.

After doing the necessary work this guitar has an incredibly responsive and sonorous voice. There is a real openness to the sound that you don’t find every day.

Properly taken care of she ought to have another many years of playing in her.

Sure going to miss this one, happy playing to the new owner!

Octave Violin Conversion

— September 17, 2016

Here’s a really fun and interesting experiment inspired in part by the mandolin’s larger cousin the Octave Mandolin. We took a 16″ Viola and set it up with special strings from Sensicore to be played in GDAE tuning an octave below a standard violin. The result is a very robust and rich cello-like timbre that is nothing short of satisfying. An excellent choice for accompaniment, regular fiddle music and fingerings can be used and will sound an octave down.

You can expect to see some further experimentation in this realm from us in the near future. As a broad spectrum of timbre and responsiveness is available by playing with string guage, string length, body size, rosin and bow selection. Who has time to be bored?

Teton Grand Concert with Pickup and Arm-bevel

— September 3, 2016

It is now becoming common for guitar builders to be incorporating a bevel on their guitars for the picking arm to comfortably rest on. The idea is gainging ground as more and more people are getting the chance to play guitars with the arm-bevel. But hardly any factory built guitars out there are incorporating this feature. Enter this new model Teton Grand Concert. Here we have a guitar that sounds exceptional for it’s price range, with a Solid Sitka Spruce top and Rosewood back and sides. The fingerboard, bridge and bridge pins are also made of Rosewood and it comes with a factory-installed Fishman Presys+ active pickup system.

Teton Ebony and Sitka Spruce Parlour STP180DVB

— May 28, 2016

Teton has done a remarkable job hitting the price point on this one. The solid sitka spruce top and 12-fret neck join, along with the ebony (laminate) back and sides make for a very appealing instrument, both tonally and visually. Not to mention a bit of bling with the abalone rosette around the sound hole. I think you’d be hard pressed to find another parlour of this quality for anywhere near this price. The bass-response on the STP180DVB is remarkable for a body this small, due largely to the 12-fret body design and excellent tone wood selection, without any compromise to the upper register. A great choice for the detailed finger-style player.

I just can’t get over how beautiful those blonde/rosey streaks in the ebony are.

Used Tabla Set with Bag and Instruction Book

— March 22, 2016

Here we’ve got a functional Tabla set of both larger and smaller Bayan and Dayan. They appear to be hand-beaten copper. Of unknown origin though most likely from India as anyone hammering out the copper bodies by hand and making an authentic looking instrument here in North America would be asking a fair penny for them.
Syahi (black pad on the skin) on the smaller “Dayan” is showing some wear. A couple of Gatta (tuning dowels) are missing from larger “Bayan”. Although we don’t usually see them on the Bayan at all. There is definitely a bit of maintenance that would need to be done to put them into prime playing condition, as you might expect from a Tabla set at this price. Though from what we can tell these are very serviceable instruments that are not in need of anything drastic.

An excellent opportunity for somebody wanting to explore the music of India

Handmade Strumstick

— January 14, 2016

A “Strumstick” or as the builder of this one called his a “Strumjo”, is an adaptation of the Appalachian lap dulcimer. It is a simple yet charming instrument with only three strings (tuned GDG) and fewer frets than our friends the guitar and ukulele. What this does is take away the possibility of playing a wrong note. You’ve only got notes that are in the scale. Whew! The downside of this, and of course there’s a downside, is that the instrument is restricted to playing almost exclusively in the key of G major. Although by creatively avoiding certain notes and highlighting others you could pull off D and C major.

It is an excellent starting point for children or people with no musical background who want to bring a little music into their lives. Also it’s light, compact design make it an excellent choice for the musician-on-the-go not wanting to take their Vintage Guild or Martin camping or hitchhiking. And the extremely adventurous can explore retuning the high string to access all sorts of different scales. for example dropping the high string one whole step allows for playing in minor keys.
